SCHOLARSHIP ROAST TO HONOR ANDERSON

By El Espada

A chance for the community to roast former Hamilton High School basketball coach, Theodore Anderson, is being provided by one of his former players, Darrell Faulkner.  The event will be held October 27th at 7p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Labor Center located at 485 Beale Street at the corner of Danny Thomas Blvd.  Billed as The First Annual Darrell Faulkner Roast, Faulkner sees the annual event as a chance to recognize a community leader who has made a difference in young people’s lives, as well as, provide a financial award and incentive for high school student-athletes to focus on their studies.

The theme for this year’s roast is “ONCE A WILDCAT, ALWAYS A WILDCAT.”  A Whitehaven resident, Anderson or “Coach A” as he’s popularly known by his contemporaries, former players and students presently teaches at Ridgeway Middle School.

“Coach A has always been a positive influence in my life as a player, student and as a coach.  He has mentored me throughout my life and has not sought recognition,” Faulkner said.  Faulkner, who prepped at Hamilton, attended the University of South Alabama for two years before transferring to Long Beach State on a basketball scholarship, where he received his B.A. Degree.  He received his Masters of Education from Freed-Hardeman University.  He coached at Hamilton as an assistant under Anderson for three years before deciding to go into his own business.

Faulkner said that Anderson’s positive influence on his players can be documented over a twenty year span.  He has helped hundreds of players get scholarships, some who didn’t even play at Hamilton.  Some of his players have excelled in the professional ranks and others have become successful productive citizens.  “Look at some of the examples like his son, Todd Day, who played a number of years in the NBA and Bernard Williams, a first round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles.  Even my nephews, Omari Faulkner and Justin Smith, recent graduates of Georgetown University and The University of Tennessee at Martin show that Coach’s seeds are still sprouting.  I am honored the Coach A would allow me to recognize him through this occasion, and I call on all Wildcats former and present, as well as, the entire community to come show Coach the love he deserves.”

Some of the speakers who committed to be on program are Willie Gregory, Nike Public Relations Coordinator, George Lapides, local sports show host and Robert Newman, an alumnus of Hamilton and former teacher/coach there who currently teaches and coaches at Melrose High School.
